🌿 Language Café: Connecting Cultures Through Sustainable Interaction New
The Language Café is an interactive and informal event designed to
bring students together through language practice and cultural exchange. Unlike
traditional classroom settings, it creates a relaxed and welcoming space where
participants can communicate freely, meet new people, and learn from each other
in a natural way.
Our recent Language Café was organized as a collaboration between
the Sustainability Club and BGS UUM, making it a truly international and
engaging experience. Students from diverse backgrounds gathered to practice
English, Korean, and Malay while sharing perspectives on their cultures,
traditions, and daily life. The event was structured around small group
discussions, where participants rotated between groups and explored different
conversation topics. This format encouraged active participation and allowed
everyone to interact with a variety of people throughout the session.
In addition to language learning, the event strongly reflected the
principles of sustainability. We adopted a paper-free format by using digital
conversation cards instead of printed materials, significantly reducing paper
waste. Snacks were also selected with sustainability in mind, avoiding excessive
individual packaging and minimizing waste generation. These small but conscious
decisions demonstrated how everyday events can be organized in a more
environmentally responsible way.
The Language Café not only helped participants improve their communication skills but also fostered intercultural understanding and a sense of global community. It showed that sustainability is not only about environmental actions, but also about building inclusive, connected, and mindful communities.
This event supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced
Inequalities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17
(Partnerships for the Goals) by promoting inclusive learning, cross-cultural
exchange, sustainable practices, and international collaboration.
Special thanks to the Sustainability Club and BGS UUM for their
dedication and collaboration in bringing this event to life. We are also
grateful to all participants for their openness, energy, and willingness to
connect across languages and cultures.
